  1. Great theme which i am using now (Version: 1.4.1) – can you help me with removing the posted on date and by user on posts?

    1. Hi thanks for using NewTek :)

      Sure no problem, in Dashboard, go to Appearance, then open Index.php in the Editor.

      Find and delete (2 instances) of the following code in index.php:-

      <div class="post-date"><?php _e('Posted on ', 'newtek'); ?><a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>" title="<?php the_title_attribute(); ?>"><?php the_time(get_option('date_format').', '.get_option('time_format')) ?></a><?php _e(' By ', 'newtek'); ?><?php the_author_posts_link(); ?></div>

      Then save by hitting the update file button.
      There is going to be an update soon (1.4.2) which you will have to remove the code from single.php as well when it gets updated.

      Alternate method:-
      In Editor, open style.css

      look for

      .post-date

      and add

      display:none;

      example:

      .post-date { display:none; font-family: 'open sans', sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; color: #bbbbbb; }

      This way you can just remove ‘display:none’ whenever you want to show it again.

      Hope that helps.

        1. To remove the permalink, open index.php and single.php (in 1.4.3+)

          Find (2 instances in index)

          <div class="post-date"><?php _e('Posted on ', 'newtek'); ?><a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>" title="<?php the_title_attribute(); ?>"><?php the_time(get_option('date_format').', '.get_option('time_format')) ?></a><?php _e(' By ', 'newtek'); ?><?php the_author_posts_link(); ?></div>

          Replace with

          <div class="post-date"><?php _e('Posted on ', 'newtek'); ?><?php the_time(get_option('date_format').', '.get_option('time_format')) ?><?php _e(' By ', 'newtek'); ?><?php the_author_posts_link(); ?></div>

          That will remove the link.

  2. i have front page set to latest posts. how can i get it to show excerpts from each post rather than the full post? i have edited index.php to <?php the_excerpt instead of the_content and now it shows excerpt of the first post only and all others are showing the full post. ?? help!

    1. Hi, the way the index.php is set up is that it displays the first post thumbnail in full size (640 width) and then the rest of posts in small size list form (150 width).

      So, You have to replace the_content with the _excerpt twice in 2 instances on the index file, so search again for the_content down the page and replace it again with the_excerpt. So basically search for it 2 times and replace it twice in the same file.

      Also! the theme is in the process of getting updated with fixes and new version will be released soon. In the mean time please create a file called ‘single.php’ and paste the following inside it:-

       <?php get_header(); ?>

      <div id="main">

      <div id="content">

      <?php if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>

      <div class="post-title"><a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>" title="<?php the_title_attribute(); ?>"><?php the_title(); ?></a></div>
      <div class="post-date"><?php _e('Posted on ', 'newtek'); ?><a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>" title="<?php the_title_attribute(); ?>"><?php the_time(get_option('date_format').', '.get_option('time_format')) ?></a><?php _e(' By ', 'newtek'); ?><?php the_author_posts_link(); ?></div>

      <?php if ( has_post_thumbnail()) : ?>
         <a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>" title="<?php the_title_attribute(); ?>" >
         <?php the_post_thumbnail('category-thumb', array('class' => 'aligncenter')); ?>
         </a>
       <?php endif; ?>

      <div id="post-<?php the_ID(); ?>" <?php post_class(); ?>>

      <?php the_content('Continue Reading &#8594;'); ?>

      </div>

      <div class="commentstext"><?php
        comments_popup_link( 'No comments yet', '1 comment', '% comments', 'comments-link', '');
      ?> <?php _e('Categories: ', 'newtek'); ?><?php the_category(', '); ?> <?php the_tags(); ?></div>

      <br style="clear: both;" /><br />

      <?php endwhile; else: ?>

      <p><?php _e('Sorry, no posts matched your criteria.', 'newtek'); ?></p><?php endif; ?>

      <?php wp_link_pages(array('next_or_number'=>'next', 'previouspagelink' => ' &laquo; ', 'nextpagelink'=>' &raquo;')); ?>

      <?php comments_template(); ?>

      </div>

      <?php get_sidebar(); ?>

      </div>

      <div id="delimiter">

      </div>

      </div>
      <?php get_footer(); ?>

      upload that to same location as the index file. Using single.php file will help when using excerpt.

      Hope that helps. If any more problems, let me know.

  3. ok thanks! that worked but now when i click on the link from the front page to go to a post it takes me to a page with on the post excerpt instead of showing the full post. i have some other customization questions too after we conquer this one if you dont mind.

  4. ok actually after i added the single.php like you suggested that fixed the post pages, but now when i click on a page (not a post) it does the same – only shows an excerpt of the page. do i need a php file for pages also?

    1. Hi, Im glad its working now! :)

      yes you also need a file called page.php. In the new update it will include all these files.

      but for the time being, create a file called ‘page.php’ and paste the following:-

      <?php get_header(); ?>

      <div id="main">

      <div id="content">

      <?php if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>

      <div class="post-title"><a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>" title="<?php the_title_attribute(); ?>"><?php the_title(); ?></a></div>

      <?php if ( has_post_thumbnail()) : ?>
         <a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>" title="<?php the_title_attribute(); ?>" >
         <?php the_post_thumbnail('category-thumb', array('class' => 'aligncenter')); ?>
         </a>
       <?php endif; ?>

      <div id="post-<?php the_ID(); ?>" <?php post_class(); ?>>

      <?php the_content('Continue Reading &#8594;'); ?>

      </div>

      <div class="commentstext"><?php
        comments_popup_link( 'No comments yet', '1 comment', '% comments', 'comments-link', '');
      ?></div>

      <br style="clear: both;" /><br />

      <?php endwhile; else: ?>

      <p><?php _e('Sorry, no posts matched your criteria.', 'newtek'); ?></p><?php endif; ?>

      <?php wp_link_pages(array('next_or_number'=>'next', 'previouspagelink' => ' &laquo; ', 'nextpagelink'=>' &raquo;')); ?>

      <?php comments_template(); ?>

      </div>

      <?php get_sidebar(); ?>

      </div>

      <div id="delimiter">

      </div>

      </div>
      <?php get_footer(); ?>

      This will fix the problem with pages.

  5. thanks! yes that fixed it! now is there a way to remove the sidebars from a specific page. i have a login page that i’m trying to cleanup and not have any sidebars. also when i view the page on ipad it cuts off the page. its like the page is X wide but the ipad viewing area is in the middle of it. the left and right side of the page is cut off and the banner doesn’t go all the way across. sorry i’m somewhat new to this and am trying to customize the theme. also is there a way to remove the search bar from the top? when do you expect the new version to be ready and what features will be added? sorry for all the questions. i can contact you directly instead of posting questsions here if you like. thanks again

    1. Hi, glad that got fixed.
      The new version is currently in testing phase and will be released when all has been approved by the team. Shouldnt be too long now! I am just waiting for the test results to come back.

      It will have an author block added to posts (as seen on this site), and various fixes to some bugs. Also it will be more responsive so will scale with smaller width devices.

      In the mean time – try this, and see how it goes:-

      Open style.css in the Editor, and at the very bottom, paste the following:-

      @media screen and (max-width: 800px) {
      body { overflow-x:hidden; }
      #content { float:none; width:100%; }
      #sidebar { display:none; overflow: hidden; }
      .site-title { padding-left:10px; padding-top:10px; padding-bottom:10px; font-size:30pt; }
      .site-title a { padding-left:10px; padding-top:10px; padding-bottom:10px; font-size:30pt; }
      .site-title a:hover { padding-left:10px; padding-top:10px; font-size:30pt; }
      #footer { display:none; overflow: hidden; }
      .toplink { display:none; }
      #container { background-color:#a90000; width:auto; border:none; overflow: hidden; }
      #container2 { background-color:#ffffff; width:auto; overflow: hidden; }
      #container3 { background-color:#2d2d2d; width:auto; overflow: hidden; }
      img { width:100%; height:auto; }
      #search { clear:both; float:left; width:200px; padding-left:10px; }
      #wrapper { width:auto; overflow: hidden; }
      #header { width:auto; overflow: hidden; }
      .site-logo { padding-left:10px; }
      .navmenu { width:auto; overflow: hidden; padding-left:10px; }
      .navmenu ul { background-color:#2d2d2d; width:auto; }
      #content iframe { width:100%; height:auto; }
      .avatar { width:30px; height:30px; }
      .wp-smiley { width:15px; height:15px; }
      .authortek {
      padding:5px;
      width:98%;
      overflow:hidden;
      margin-bottom:20px; }
      #comment { width:70%; }
      #author { width:70%; }
      #email { width:70%; }
      #url { width:70%; }
      }

      Sorry I dont have an ipad to test it out on, but hopefully that CSS in style.css should fix the problems.

      If you still wish to remove the search bar after that let me know and I will explain how to remove it from the top.

  6. wow that was quick! you’re a coding machine! yes much better on ipad but it removed the sidebar from ipad. is there a way to have the ipad view the site just like computer – with sidebars but formatted on page so everthing fits? i was trying to get rid of sidebars on the initial login page (on ipad, pc, etc, any device) so when i go to site it does not have sidebar but then after i login the sidebars appear on every page except the initial login page..? also yes if you could tell me how to remove search bar from the top that would be nice. also i’ve added a read more to the index.php for my post excerpts but it only shows on the first post. all other posts dont include the “read more”. LOVE the theme btw. its so clean and neat – just what i’ve been looking for, thats why i’m sticking it out to try and customize it. thanks!

    1. Thanks! glad you like it :)

      In the new update, I have set it up so that the portable devices view the site as a mobile site.

      To exclude the ipad from that list, try this:-

      the css which you pasted,
      Find

      @media screen and (max-width: 800px)

      Replace with

      @media screen and (max-width: 767px)

      For the login screen, are you referring to the WordPress login screen? can you post a screenshot of it so can I see what you mean by that.

      To remove the search bar on top, Open header.php, and delete the following:-

      <div id="search">
                        <?php get_search_form() ?>
               </div>

      then save the file.

      For the sidebar on pages, What you can do for now is to open page.php and remove the following from it:-

      <?php get_sidebar(); ?>

      This will remove the sidebar from (all) pages. To remove the sidebar on an individual page, you may have to find a plugin for that.

      Hope that helps with those problems.

  7. thanks! i’m not sure how to post my screen capture, there’s not place to add attachment and copy/paste don’t work. i’m using theme-my-login plugin and thought there might be a way to customize the login page only. the did the trick removing the search bar. any ideas about the “read more”? when i go to front page where it shows latest posts, after the first excerpt it show the “read more” but all the other excerpts do not show “read more”. ? is there a way to remove the user link on the comments. in other words i don’t want someone to be able to click on their name and it take them to their user profile page. also is there a way to move the menu so it appears below the header? not a big deal but i’m just experimenting and thought if it was simple i’d give it a shot to see how i like it…

    1. No problem. I think it might be the plugin which needs to be looked at. You will have to ask the plugin author about making the login page, because the default wordpress login uses no sidebar and is placed in the middle.

      For the ‘read more’ , in your index.php there should be two instances of:-

      <?php the_excerpt(); ?>

      make sure it appears twice when you search in the index file.

      Then open up functions.php and make sure this code is at the bottom of it before the ‘?>’

      function new_excerpt_more($more) {
             global $post;
      	return '<a class="moretag" href="'. get_permalink($post->ID) . '"> Read More...</a>';
      }
      add_filter('excerpt_more', 'new_excerpt_more');

      Yes the navigation menu can be placed anywhere, try this:-

      open up header.php, then instead of ‘copying’ use ‘cut’ on:-

      <div id="container3">
      <div class="navmenu">
      <?php if ( has_nav_menu( 'header-menu' ) )
      {
      wp_nav_menu( array( 'theme_location' => 'header-menu' , 'container' => '' ) );
      }
      else{echo 'Navigation Menu not set! Go to Dashboard -> Appearance -> Customize and select a menu in Navigation. To create a new menu go to Dashboard -> Appearance -> Menus' ;} ?>
      </div>

      </div>

      then just before

      <div id="wrapper">

      paste it all.

      it should look like this:-

      <div id="container3">
      <div class="navmenu">
      <?php if ( has_nav_menu( 'header-menu' ) )
      {
      wp_nav_menu( array( 'theme_location' => 'header-menu' , 'container' => '' ) );
      }
      else{echo 'Navigation Menu not set! Go to Dashboard -> Appearance -> Customize and select a menu in Navigation. To create a new menu go to Dashboard -> Appearance -> Menus' ;} ?>
      </div>

      </div>

      <div id="wrapper">

      that should do the trick.

  8. that worked thanks! on my site, i think I like the menu underneath the header. any suggestions about the links on comments? I’d like it to still show the name of the person but have the link disable so it does not take to the user’s profile page when they click it.

    1. The name in the comments area will not normally link to anything, unless someone enters their website when posting a comment. Then it links to their website.
      The only place which should be bringing the user to the author’s profile is when someone clicks on their name on the front page.

      Are you referring to the author name on the posts and front page?

      And are you using any additional plugins, maybe one of them needs adjusting.

      1. No I’m referring to when you make a comment on a page where it says logged in as “myname”. if i click “myname” it takes me to my user-profile page. I’d like it to show “myname” but not link to the user-profile page. how do i disable the link?

        1. Ok I see what you mean now.
          Try this, open up functions.php,

          at the bottom, before the ‘?>’

          paste the following:-

          add_filter( 'comment_form_defaults', 'newtek_modify_comment_fields' );
          function newtek_modify_comment_fields( $fields ) {
          $user = wp_get_current_user();
          $user_identity = $user->exists() ? $user->display_name : '';
          $fields['logged_in_as'] = '<p class="logged-in-as">' . sprintf( __( 'Logged in as %2$s. <a href="%3$s" title="Log out of this account">Log out?</a>' ), admin_url( '' ), $user_identity, wp_logout_url( apply_filters( 'the_permalink', get_permalink( ) ) ) ) . '</p>';
          return $fields;
          }

          it should remove the link from the name.

  9. I know this has to be simple but I’m stumped! How do I create a page and put the search feature on the page instead of using the widget? Is there a shortcode or something I need to use on the page? Thanks

    1. No problem. Try this:-
      Open functions.php

      just before the ‘?>’

      add this

      add_shortcode('newteksearch', 'get_search_form');

      then in your pages you can just use the shortcode like

      [newteksearch]

      if using a custom page, eg. custompage.php,
      then you have to place

      <?php get_search_form(); ?>

      within the code to display the search box.

      Hope that helps.

      1. Awesome! That worked. Is there a way to add a “next post” and “previous post” to each post? So when i open a post, at the bottom it would have a link to go to the “next post” and “previous post”. Thanks!
